Well, here it is, my ideas for an indepth Demon Summoner class. Just saying, any ideas here are subject to change depending on if they're not balanced, just plain stupid, need better names, and so on.
The Concept
Basically, Demon Summoners wouldn't start powerful at all. They'd be about the same as Merchants, but with different spells and no Employing abilities. To BECOME powerful, they'd have to level a bit, but to ease the process of leveling, they'd be given two minor summoning spells, and then they'd have to go to the Demonic Library, their guildhall, and research Demon names, as well as get blood or ink for drawing a pentagram. I'll move onto their skills and spells with examples now.
Abilities
Level 1:
Call Imp (Spell): Imps are small Demons, who are typically used as slaves, scouts, and so on, by Archdemons. This spell allows you to call a random Imp of a particular sin to barter with. For a small bit of gold or maybe an item or two, depending on their sin, the Imp will help you do specific things. They can be used to accompany you and cast low level spells on NPCs, or you can try bargaining with them to get a Minor Demon's name. Some Minor Demons can only be summoned by getting a name from an Imp. Example: "cast call greed" would summon a randomly named Imp of Greed.
Jolt (Spell): Zaps the target with a bit of Demonic Lightning. Minimal damage, but should have a very small chance to paralyze the target which grows as the Demon Summoner gets more powerful.
Level 10:
Summon Demon (Spell): At this level, only a fool would attempt to summon anything other than Minor Demons, however, given the right circumstances, a Demon Summoner could bring forth and manage to bargain with a Major Demon and live to tell the tale. This spell is used for any Demons above Imps. Example "cast summon xeeltiru" would summon a Demon named Xeeltiru into the room and onto a pentagram, if one is drawn in the room.
Draw Pentagram (Skill): Allows the Summoner to draw a magical pentagram using a corpse, their own blood (a percentage of their HPs) or special ink. All have varied degrees of protective strength against specific Demon types.
All Abilities after this must be gained through bargaining with Demons, a system I will elaborate on in detail, but should allow the Summoners to customize themselves quite a bit.
Bargaining with Demons
To bargain with Imps, you need only something they want. Gluttonous Imps will want food, Imps of Greed will want gold, and so on, but each will know one or two Minor Demons' names, and will tell you them if you ask. To start bargaining, use the spell to summon an Imp of your preferred sin, and then speak a greeting, then they will talk back. Imps are docile Demons, they very rarely attack those who summon them, so bargaining with them will never be particularly difficult. Once you've gotten to a point where the Imp asks you what you desire, say something like... "I desire your aid" to get them to fight with you, or "I desire knowledge" to hopefully get a Lesser Demon's name out of them.
Minor Demons can't grant many powers, but they are the bulky fighters of their home, and some are known to be able to possess a Summoner and grant them Demonic abilities and empowerment for a time. To bargain with one, you must have a pentagram drawn in the room, summoning any Demons above Imps is generally suicide without some form of protection. Once they materialize, you must greet them, and they will begin conversing with you. You can then ask for abilities, power, wealth, and so on, but each of these things comes with a price. Some Demons will want money or items, some will want corpses or for you to slaughter a number of people. The most powerful of the Demon Summoner's abilities relies on the Summoner being able to fulfill the wishes of the Demon in question regularly.
A Demonic Pact will grant the Summoner greater power and influence with the Demon, but the Demon will also request things of the Summoner based on the Demon's sin irregularly. There are four ranks of Demon. Imps, the smallest and generally weakest, Minor Demons, the most common and the major fighting force, Major Demons, the stronger Demons, and Archdemons, the strongest of them all, they are generally Demon Lords or Ladies, and offer a wide variety of benefits for being of service to them.
Some Stuff Gained From Bargains
Claws: Allows you to do more damage unarmed and with further upgrades, can do a different damage type half the time.
Unholy Artifacts: Items of great power that increase attributes.
Spells: Many Demons have studied magic, and you can learn a great deal from them, gaining access to spells from other classes.
Horns: Headbutt does more damage.
Tail: Randomly attacks in combat and can be upgraded to do a different damage type.
Dark Blessings: Buffs that empower the Summoner for a time.
Demon Followers: Some Demons can cast spells, while others can tear enemies to shreds. Regardless of their specialty, they can be enlisted to help you as long as they are satisfied.
Possession: You willingly allow a Demon to possess you and you gain powers and abilities you wouldn't normally have access to as long as the Demon is satisfied with your work.
I will update this when I have more time and announce that I did so on the MUD.
